Train of Thought

Thoughts, just like trains, gain momentum and become more and more difficult to stop. Negative thoughts take you into a deep, dark tunnel from which there seems to be no escape. Have you ever felt so low that, when some well-meaning person told you to ‘snap out of it’ or ‘just think positive thoughts’ you just wanted to punch them in the face? Ha! I know that feeling! People think that I am always positive, always looking for the good in every situation. My life has been a winding path through valleys and climbing hills of love/hate, happy/miserable, kind and then kind of horrible. The more I ‘horribilized’ thoughts of anything, my job, my health, my physical appearance, my life, the more horrible I thought it was. Ah ha! Momentum was gained on the downward spiral.

Trains running at full speed cannot be instantly stopped. If the engineer pulls the emergency brake at full throttle, results can be disastrous. Trains can derail from all the cars and contents behind the engine slamming forward. Start to slow down and start paying attention to what is going on inside of you.

When a person is so depressed, miserable and anxious, and they are told to ‘look on the bright side’, ‘see the silver lining’, ‘just lighten up’, they may feel worse. Recognize what you are feeling and understand that your feelings are showing you that something in your life is off track. Do you feel worse around certain people or doing a job that you are not suited for just to pay the bills? When you stay on the wrong track, negative situations begin to show up more and more often. Why? Because you attract what you are in harmony with. If you notice more and more negativity building momentum in you, look at the track you are on. Do you love where you’re headed? Willpower alone will not stop the train of thought. Get help before your life derails. Worry, doubt and fear lead to anxiety and depression. Learn how to gain control of your thoughts before they cause a disaster in your life. 

Begin to change one thing in your life. Trying to change everything at once can derail your best intentions. Pick one thing to focus on. Make it something that you really want. Notice things start to become easier. Soon you can recognize the thoughts and feelings that you don’t like and can start to change them. The old track that was taking you into the deep, dark tunnel starts to dissolve as you move in the opposite direction. My thought trains are now more bright, beautiful and wide open. Yes, you can do this, too. Remember the Little Engine that Could was successful with the words ‘I think I can”. Whether you think you can or you think you can’t you are right. There is light at the end of the tunnel. No, it’s not another train, unless you think it is. 

Changing thought tracks is a process of repetition, not an abrupt turnaround. Everything in your life can improve. Start to think into results that you want instead of continuing to think about what you don’t want. You can feel more freedom and joy in your life. Get a mentor to hold you accountable if you tend to procrastinate. I know; I was once a master procrastinator. The knowledge I gained from being mentored has made all the difference in my life.
